Open Post: Who invented this calendar anyway?

How unfortunate.

Yes, Grantaire was fully aware that the year being longer at the mansion would logically cause seasons to drift when someone kept track of the old calendar, or at least what had been pinned down as the old calendar for convenience sake, which was almost necessary when people's arrivals weren't necessarily tied to the day they left. He hadn't given it too much thought last year, when his birthday, such that it was, arrived in spring like he was used to.

Dark, though, was unfortunate. Not inappropriate for the next notable anniversary coming up, but for this one, not at all. Of course, it wasn't as if he would have been planning much in the way of an event, Dark or no, but it would have been nice to treat himself to something or other, regardless.

Instead, he has installed himself in the game room, where he is carefully balancing dominoes on their ends to make a domino rally on the billiards table. It's a nice large flat surface, so it should work nicely. Have to keep entertained somehow.

"A scaly one, then."

"A mermaid."

He laughs. "I did not expect that answer."

"Scaly, fast, charming -- I'm really making things up, but humor me."

"I have the sudden urge to go sit on a rock and sing sailors to their doom."

[sagramore]

"Kade could make thee a tail!"

[futaille]

"He could! Or I could steal Jared's. Whenever I find him."

[sagramore]

"Oh, that must have been what put it in my head! I do think thou wouldst be far fairer than Jared."

[futaille]

"He would be a flatfish mermaid."

[sagramore]

"A flounder!"

[futaille]

"Both eyes on one side and everything."

[sagramore]

"My God. That's so good. He does stay in one spot and lurk, too."

[futaille]

"Jared the flounder. It's perfect."

[sagramore]

"But thee -- art thou an eel-maid? Is that the fish that makes up thy tail?"

[futaille]

"I do like a clever eel but then we return to contemplating my slime or lack thereof. An octopus also comes to mind but I think that might be straying from the general conceit of a mermaid, as they are not fish."

[sagramore]

"They're fish! Why wouldn't they be fish?"

[futaille]

"They are not fish! They are, in fact, closer to snails."

[sagramore]

"Mermaids are snails? Thou'rt laughing at me, this isn't true."

[futaille]

"Octopuses are snails! Mermaids are fish! Or, at least, half fish."

[sagramore]

"That's even more ridiculous. Octopuses look nothing like snails."

[futaille]

"I know! But they are nevertheless cousins somehow! Think of the nautilus, which looks like an octopus with a shell, so it's another cousin in the middle of them."

[sagramore]

"I've never heard of a nautilus."

[futaille]

"Ah! In lieu, then, of dragging you to the library and probably not finding anything on account of the season, imagine what looks like a snail shell, with little octopus arms and eyes poking out of the end."

[sagramore]

"I have no imagination, I can't envision it. Canst thou draw me one?"
