Open Post: Who invented this calendar anyway?

How unfortunate.

Yes, Grantaire was fully aware that the year being longer at the mansion would logically cause seasons to drift when someone kept track of the old calendar, or at least what had been pinned down as the old calendar for convenience sake, which was almost necessary when people's arrivals weren't necessarily tied to the day they left. He hadn't given it too much thought last year, when his birthday, such that it was, arrived in spring like he was used to.

Dark, though, was unfortunate. Not inappropriate for the next notable anniversary coming up, but for this one, not at all. Of course, it wasn't as if he would have been planning much in the way of an event, Dark or no, but it would have been nice to treat himself to something or other, regardless.

Instead, he has installed himself in the game room, where he is carefully balancing dominoes on their ends to make a domino rally on the billiards table. It's a nice large flat surface, so it should work nicely. Have to keep entertained somehow.

"I'm sure he is. He hasn't thanked me outright, but he's a reticent man."

"That's true, he's shy."

[futaille]

"Which is fine. I'm perfectly able to speak enough for the both of us."

[sagramore]

"Dost thou find thou knowst what words he would speak if he could? Oracularly?"

"I don't know. Perhaps he keeps himself silent for his own good, as he knows otherwise he'd give into his worst impulses. Like, say, harrassing shop workers for not treating him like an emperor. He knows he's better off being quiet and not terribly rude."

[sagramore]

"Jesu, we don't need anyone who behaves like that! I'm so grateful for his self-control."

[futaille]

"I'm very proud of him."

[sagramore]

"As thou shouldst be. It must be somewhat trying for him to have to rely on someone else all the time."

[futaille]

"I can only imagine."

[sagramore]

"And yet it does sound as though thou hast misplaced him."

[futaille]

"Left him to his own devices for a bit!"

[sagramore]

"Oh! Building his confidence with a little freedom?"

[futaille]

"Exactly. Letting him stretch his wings."

[sagramore]

"Thou art a good father."

[futaille]

He wrinkles his nose. "Older brother at best."

[sagramore]

"Convince me."

[futaille]

"That I'm not Jared's father?"

[sagramore]

"That's right. I want thy most compelling argument."

[futaille]

"First, no family resemblance whatsoever. Second, I'm grossly irresponsible. Third, I think the mansion itself may be his mother and I haven't even taken it out to dinner."

[sagramore]

"Not a one of those things precludes a man from becoming a father. Hast thou not met my children?"

[futaille]

"Of course I have. But you're exceptionally suited for fatherhood."

[sagramore]

"Yes, but being suited or unsuited rarely has an impact on the reality."

[futaille]

"That much I certainly can't argue."

[sagramore]

"Do another argument, I'm still convinceable."

[futaille]

"It's difficult to be a father to something that's not actually alive?"
